 Let's talk about gemstones

While there are tons of posts I could do on oils and herbs, I think today I will change the topic over to one that is a little more controversial...yep, let's talk about crystals and other gemstones.

The belief and use of gemstones goes back to Biblical times and even further back in time to the legends of ancient civilizations. Gemstones are believed to contain all sorts of properties, from the abilitity to help heal to the abilitity to contact higher forms of consciousness.

On my desk as I write this I see a small container of various stones I placed by the computer, to help ground the effects of unhealthy frequencies from the electronics...a crystal ball to my right, an aromatherapy burner which I have placed tiny little crystals, and to my left there is a small bowl of dark stones which are said to help one stay grounded and centered. Sounds a little nuts doesn't it?

Well, let's take a look at some of the claims:

Her knack for finding just the perfect graphics amazes me! I have tried and what would take me days of searching, she has done in hours. Thank you!

NOTE: None of these stones (just like oils, herbs and other alternative helpers) are to ever be used instead of medical/emotional/spiritual support, but rather as an helpful addition.

More on this topic later... Have a great week everyone!

 Cooking with Herbs- Cinnamon

Now I thought this was interesting....while surfing the internet for a quick and easy way to get some info for this post (being a bit lazy today and didn't want to spend a lot time looking in all my notebooks for the info)...I went to Google and typed in cooking with herbs and I found this on a Campbell's webpage (you know, the soup)

"Their uses go back to ancient times. Do they have magical properties? We don't know for sure but we DO know they make food come alive and give your taste buds a jolt!"

From all the research I have done over the years on holistic health, herbs do have lots of medicinal properties.

Take Cinnamon for example. This is one that I have recently done a lot of research on because I found out that I have a little too high of a cholesterol level.

Cinnamon joins cholesterol battle

By Judy Foreman | August 24, 2004

The next drug in your medicine cabinet might come from the spice aisle of the grocery store.

Although research is still preliminary, doctors and researchers are getting excited about the diabetes and cholesterol-fighting potential of cinnamon.

Cinnamon probably "can't harm in small doses, it may help and it's not adding calories," said Melinda Maryniuk, a senior dietician at the Joslin Diabetes Center in Boston.

A small study completed last year on the possible health benefits of cinnamon was "very exciting and promising," according to Dr. Andrew Greenberg, director of the obesity metabolism laboratory at Tufts University, who is so intrigued he has begun studying it himself.

The 40-day study, of 60 people in Pakistan with Type 2 diabetes, found that one gram a day of cinnamon -- one-fourth of a teaspoon twice daily -- significantly lowered the subjects' blood sugar, triglycerides (fatty acids in the blood), LDL (or "bad") cholesterol, and total cholesterol.

(the rest of the article is here- http://www.boston.com/news/education/higher/articles/2004/08/24/cinnamon_joins_cholesterol_battle/)

Other possible benefits:

Anti-Clotting Actions
Anti-Microbial Activity
Blood Sugar Control
Cinnamon's Scent Boosts Brain Function

A Few Quick Serving Ideas:

Enjoy one of the favorite kids' classics - cinnamon toast - with a healthy twist. Drizzle flax seed oil onto whole wheat toast and then sprinkle with cinnamon and honey.

Simmer cinnamon sticks with soymilk and honey for a deliciously warming beverage.

Adding ground cinnamon to black beans to be used in burritos or nachos will give them a uniquely delicious taste.

Healthy sauté lamb with eggplant, raisins and cinnamon sticks to create a Middle Eastern inspired meal.

Add ground cinnamon when preparing curries.

Safety

Cinnamon is not a commonly allergenic food and is not known to contain measurable amounts of goitrogens, oxalates, or purines.

A good article to read if you have time- http://www.whfoods.org/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=68

Hope you're having a great day. Have an herb you'd like to know more about, place it in the comments.

What can you do with oils and herbs?

Essential oils and various herbs can be used in all sorts of ways from creating just the right mood to clearing out unhealthy energy. Here are some tips for you today on just a few of the ways they can be used according to Feng Shui and other schools of thought:

Bringing in a little more prosperity into the home or office- Lemon Oil, Lemongrass Oil, and Peppermint Oil. A couple of drops of each in an aromatherapy burner or combined in a spray bottle with spring water.

Creating a more peaceful environment- Rose, Jasmine and Musk. A couple of drops of each in an aromatherapy burner or combined in a spray bottle with spring water.

Romance in the bedroom- Ylang Ylang, Rose and Jasmine. A couple of drops of each in an aromatherapy burner or combined in a spray bottle with spring water.

Clearing a space of unhealthy energy- Frankincense, Myrrh and Cinnamon. A couple of drops of each in an aromatherapy burner or combined in a spray bottle with spring water.

What do I mean by "unhealthy" energy? That's a question I get a lot so I thought I would take a minute here and answer it.

Unhealthy energy is any energy that makes a room, a space, or a person feel blocked, stagnant, unbalanced, or just plain "sickly." Everything is really just energy and this energy can develop all the symptoms I just described. Aromatherapy is one of the ways we can help raise this energy to a healthier level or vibration.

Tip on mixing oils:

Use a dropper
Swirl the oils to mix, don't shake
Store away from heat, light and moisture

If you ever have a question about the properties of an oil, let me know, I'd be happy to answer it.

Herbs can be used in lots more ways than in cooking! You can place them in little bags and use them in your bath, hang them as sachets in your closet, place them in your dresser drawers, etc.

Using cheesecloth, assemble the herbs you want to use and when mixed, place about a handful in the center of a large square of cheesecloth. Tie up the ends and add this to your bath. If you don't have cheesecloth, use an old washcloth. If you want to keep some of your mixture you created, be sure to do so in a previously unused jar with a tight-fitting lid and store away from sunlight.

Have a wonderful day everyone...I'm off to celebrate my anniversary by cooking up a romantic evening at home, see you tomorrow

 Oils

There are four main things to remember when using essential oils:

1. You can be allergic to these substances.

2. Always use a base oil when applying to the skin

3. A few drops is all you need as they are highly concentrated.

4. Not to be used during pregnancy

One of the first things I found out when I started learning about aromatherapy was by accident and it was very unpleasant. At the time, I didn't know that Chamomile was a relative of Ragweed. I was buying up all sorts of great herbal products and was wondering why I was having such a bad reaction to them. Turned out that it was related to my allergy to ragweed because they all contained Chamomile. Needless to say, I learned to be more careful about reading labels. So the moral here is, just because it is all natural doesn't mean you can't have a bad reaction to it. Know your allergies and be sure what you are planning to use isn't related to something that you know you are allergic to. So far, Chamomile is the only thing I have found that I have a problem with.

"Allergic reactions to chamomile are rare, but possible. If you’re allergic to ragweed, aster and chrysanthemums (members of the Asteraceae family), it’s possible that you may also react to chamomile. (If taken internally, you might have some bronchial constriction, and if used topically, you might have a skin reaction.) Often when people have allergic reactions to chamomile, though, the plants are not true chamomile, but one of a number of “mayweeds” or other plants that are commonly called chamomile."

There are lots of ways to use essential oils for aromatherapy purposes. But before I go into that I think it is important to mention that not all oils sold as "aromatherapy oils" are actually of much benefit. Unfortunately, there are a lot of impostors being sold. To get the true benefits from aromatherapy you need to use pure essential oils. The reason is a long drawn out explanation of how essential oils are made and that's not really important. What is important is that you know it is pure and not merely a fragrance.

Essential oils used in aromatherapy aren't cheap. That's not to say that they are horribly expensive, but they do cost a bit. I have two bottles I keep on my desk at all times which I occasionally add a few drops into a water feature that sits on my desk. As I look at the bottles, the 100% pure Lavender oil, made by the company NOW was $21.95 for the 4 oz. bottle. The Tea Tree (100% pure) made by the company Paragon was $22.00 for the 2 oz. bottle. So as you can see, they are a little costly but well worth the money in benefits.

Since I mentioned those, I will tell a little about them first.

Lavender is often called the Angel of Healing and Purification. It is one of the most gentle essential oils yet the most powerful. Sounds like a contradiction but it's not. It is gentle in scent but a powerful healer for the mind/body/spirit. There is a previous post in this blog that talks about the chakras and various scents so I won't go into that right now, only to say that this oil is helpful with activating the crown chakra.

Lavender is wonderful for clearing negative/unhealthy energy from the human energy field as well as a space. What I mean by space is your home, a room, or any type of space. I use lavender in herb form for clearing spaces of unhealthy energy. I make my own smudge sticks (if you aren't sure what that is, ask me in the comments) and I intertwine sage, cedar and lavender together to do space clearings.

I have asthma and lavender helps with asthma and other respiratory problems including colds. It also helps with headaches. One thing I do when I have a really bad headache is pour about a teaspoon of base oil (usually sesame seed oil) and mix in a couple of drops of lavender oil and rub it into my temples and at the base of my skull. It really helps.

Lavender is also another good one for the immune system and basically helps with all healing when a few(around 5-7 drops) are used in a full bath.

If you use crystals and gemstones, lavender makes for a great bath for them, clearing away unhealthy accumulated energy.

I told you about how I use a water feature for aromatherapy on my desk but there are also other ways you can utilize essential oils. I saw in a previous post that LilLadyReg did where she mentions using the spray bottle method. I have all kinds of "magic potions" mixed up in spray bottles. All it is, is using natural spring water in a unused spray bottle and a few drops of the essential oils you need. It's OK to mix some. Depending on the need, I usually mix 2 or 3 different oils together to make the aromatherapy spray. If I feel a space is in need of grounding, I'll use a couple of drops of Patchouli, a couple of drops Myrrh, and a couple of drops Lavender. If I need to energize a space, I make up a new bottle with a couple of drops of Lemon, a couple of drops of Orange, and a couple of drops of Tea Tree. Tea Tree is called the Miracle Oil because of it many uses. It has antibacterial and antifungal properties. It also stimulates the immune system, helps with burns, wounds, insect bites and a host of other problems.

In sick rooms, I use a spray mix of Eucalyptus and Tea Tree. For raising self esteem and happiness, I use a mix of Rose and Rosemary oils. If I want to use a spray for the bedroom, I use Ylang Ylang and Rose oils, Rose for the romantic aspects and also a gentle aphrodisiac, and Ylang Ylang for the exotic and sensual aspects.

It's really what ever your preference is. There are no set rules on how to mix but I would never mix more than 3 together at one time. You don't want to be overpowered by a scent and if you mix too much it creates an unpleasant scent.

So not to make this too long (I'm famous for long posts)... here are some ways you can use essential oils:

Massage- They penetrate deeply into the skin but please remember that not all oils are meant for contact with skin so be careful If in doubt, ask where you buy your oils. Use 7-10 drops of the proper oil with at least 1 oz. of massage oil.

Bath- In hot water essential oils are quickly absorbed through the skin as well as the vapors are inhaled. You add after the tub is filled, 3-7 drops of your chosen oil. Again, be sure that it is an oil that is safe to come into contact with skin. Some suggestions- Lavender, Tea Tree, Rose, Ylang Ylang, Jasmine. I use a few drops of Eucalyptus if I feel a cold coming on. I don't mix oils together in the bath, I use only one type. Save the mixing for the spray bottles.

Steam Inhalation- In the winter if I need to run a vaporizer, I will mix a few drops of an essential oil (usually Tea Tree or Eucalyptus. Other oils that are good for steam inhalation are Lavender, Peppermint, Pine, and Sandalwood.

Did you know that Rosemary is great for your hair? I add a few drops in my shampoo bottle. Rosemary helps stimulate hair growth. Patchouli, Chamomile, and Tea Tree are helpful for dandruff.

That's it for now, more later this week. Have a great week everyone!

 More on Aromatherapy

First I would like to thank LilLadyReg for asking me to partner with her on this blog site! I've been wanting to post on subjects such as the ones she has already touched on but I didn't want her to think I was taking her ideas, so this is great, we can both work on this site and really get something going. I'm pretty excited about it and I hope you will enjoy what we have planned. Again, thanks LilLadyReg!

OK, on to the post....

Aromatherapy has been around for 6000 years or more. The Greeks, Romans, and ancient Egyptians all used aromatherapy oils. The Egyptian physician Imhotep recommended fragrant oils for bathing, massage, and for embalming their dead nearly 6000 years ago. Imhotep is the Egyptian god of medicine and healing. Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine, used aromatherapy baths and scented massage. He used aromatic fumigations to rid Athens of the plague. The modern era of aromatherapy dawned in 1930 when the French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse coined the term aromatherapy for the therapeutic use of essential oils. He was fascinated by the benefits of lavender oil in healing his burned hand without leaving any scars. He started investigating the effect of other essential oils for healing and for their psychotherapeutic benefits.

Oils That Should Not Be Used At All In Aromatherapy:

Almond, Bitter Aniseed Arnica Boldo Leaf Calamus Camphor Cassia Cinnamon Bark Costus Elecampane Fennel (Bitter) Horseradish Jaborandi Leaf Mugwort (Armoise) Mustard Origanum Origanum (Spanish) Pennyroyal (European) Pennyroyal (N. American) Pine (Dwarf) Rue Sage Sassafras Sassafras (Brazilian) Savin Savory (Winter) Southernwood Tansy Thuja (Cedarleaf) Thuja Plicata Wintergreen Wormseed Wormwood
(list was taken from the Directory of Essential Oils for Aromatherapy-Hazardous Essential Oils)

Things to remember when using essential oils: If applying on the skin such as for a massage oil, be sure to use a base. A base is an oil such as sesame seed, almond oil, or other oil commoningly used for massages, and mix in a few drops of the esstential oil to the base. Let's say if you have a teaspoon of base, you would add 2-3 drops of essential oil. Essentials oils can and will burn if applied directly to skin, so always use a base. You don't need much of the essential oil as it is highly concentrated. Not only are some essentials oils good for the skin and muscles, they are good for the senses, here's how it works:

"Essential oils stimulates the powerful sense of smell. It is known that odors we smell have a significant impact on how we feel. In dealing with patients who have lost the sense of smell, doctors have found that a life without fragrance can lead to high incidence of psychiatric problems such as anxiety and depression. We have the capability to distinguish 10,000 different smells. It is believed that smells enter through cilia (the fine hairs lining the nose) to the limbic system, the part of the brain that controls our moods, emotions, memory and learning. Studies with brain wave frequency has shown that smelling lavender increases alpha waves in the back of the head, which are associated with relaxation. Fragrance of Jasmine increases beta waves in the front of the head, which are associated with a more alert state. Scientific studies have also shown that essential oils contain chemical components that can exert specific effects on the mind and body."
(this quote was taken from http://www.holisticonline.com/Aromatherapy/aroma_how.htm)

Over the next few days I will post on various scents and how we can use them. Hope everyone is having a great weekend.
